HOW TO APPLY:

To apply, please submit the following to , using ‘V2601 – Mechanical Design Engineer’ as the subject of your email:

  1. CV
  2. Cover letter outlining your suitability for this role and your motivation for joining Hooper Quinn
  3. Responses to the Application Exercises detailed below

You are welcome to include relevant work samples/portfolios in support of your application.

IMPORTANT:

  1. Applications will not be considered if any of the three required documents listed above is missing
  2. Only applications submitted to the above email address will be considered

Application Exercises:

These short exercises are designed to give us an insight into how you think, communicate, and approach challenges, and equally, to give you a feel for the types of situations you may encounter in this role. Please ensure your responses reflect your own reasoning and experience. Submissions that appear to have been generated primarily by AI tools will not be considered.

Please take no more than 90 minutes to complete the exercises.

EXERCISE 1: Concept Design – Compact Actuation System

A client approaches Hooper Quinn with the requirement to design a compact mechanism to deploy a sensor mast from within a small autonomous vehicle.

The mechanism must extend a sensor mast vertically from a stowed position inside the vehicle.

Requirements:

  • Linear extension: 120 mm
  • Maximum load: 200 N
  • Deployment time: < 5 second
  • Available envelope for mechanism: 250 × 150 × 100 mm
  • Power supply: 24V DC

The system may be subject to:

  • Vibration and occasional shock loads
  • Outdoor operating conditions
  • Repeated actuation cycles during testing and operation

Task:

Please describe a concept design for the actuation system and mechanism that could achieve this. (Note: we are interested in your thinking and reasoning rather than a complete design solution.)

Your response should include:

  1. The type of actuator you would propose and the reasoning behind your choice
  2. The mechanism used to convert actuation into linear motion
  3. A conceptual layout of the mechanism (a simple sketch is welcome but not required)
  4. The key engineering considerations that would influence your design
  5. Any technical risks or potential failure modes you would investigate early in the design process

You may make any reasonable engineering assumptions necessary in order to answer the question.

Please limit your response to 1–2 pages.

Sketches or diagrams may be included if helpful.

EXERCISE 2: Working at Pace

Engineering projects at Hooper Quinn often move quickly, with tight timelines and evolving technical challenges.

Please describe a situation where you had to deliver engineering work under significant time pressure.

Include:

  • The context of the project
  • The actions you took to maintain quality while working quickly
  • The outcome

Maximum: 250 words

EXERCISE 3: Culture & Values

In your own words, please select one of the following values and 1) describe what that value means to you and how you put it into practice in your day-to-day life; and 2) give a relevant example from your professional experience where you have demonstrated that value:

  • Tenacious Curiosity
  • Efficient Agility
  • Proactive Responsibility

Maximum: 300 words

Thank you for taking the time to complete these exercises. We appreciate the effort you put into your application and look forward to learning more about you.

New Edge Computing Employers to Watch in 2026: UK and Global Companies Shaping Edge Innovation

Edge computing is transforming how data is processed by bringing compute power closer to the source of generation. With the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT), real‑time analytics, autonomous systems, and latency‑sensitive applications, edge computing has moved from a niche discipline to a core component of digital infrastructure. In 2026, organisations that specialise in or heavily invest in edge computing are expanding their teams to build distributed systems, real‑time analytics platforms, and edge‑optimised AI. For professionals exploring opportunities on www.EdgeComputingJobs.co.uk , understanding which employers are growing, winning contracts, or securing investment is essential. This article highlights the new and high‑growth edge computing employers to watch in 2026, including UK startups, international innovators with a UK presence, and established companies shifting strategy toward edge.

How Many Edge Computing Tools Do You Need to Know to Get an Edge Computing Job?

If you’re trying to start or grow a career in edge computing, it can feel like you’re navigating a maze of tools, frameworks and platforms — Kubernetes, Docker, IoT frameworks, AWS Greengrass, Azure IoT Edge, OpenShift, TinyML toolkits, networking orchestration, real-time streaming frameworks, and on it goes. Scroll job boards and community forums and it’s easy to conclude that unless you master every buzzword imaginable, you’ll never get a job. Here’s the honest truth most edge computing hiring managers won’t necessarily say out loud: 👉 They don’t hire you because you know every edge computing tool — they hire you because you can solve real system problems using the tools you know. Tools matter, yes — but only when they support clear outcomes: reliable systems, performance at scale, secure edge deployments and real business value. So how many edge computing tools do you actually need to know to secure a job? For most edge computing roles, the answer is fewer than you think — and a lot clearer when sorted by fundamentals and roles. This guide shows you what matters, what doesn’t, and how to focus your time wisely so you come across as capable, confident and employable.

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Edge Computing Job Applications (UK Guide)

In today’s fast-evolving tech landscape, edge computing is one of the most sought-after fields — blending distributed systems, embedded systems, networking, cloud, IoT, data and real-time processing. But that also means hiring managers are highly selective. They scan applications fast and look for signals of relevance, impact, technical depth and real-world delivery long before they read every line. This guide demystifies what hiring managers in edge computing look for first in your application — so you can tailor your CV, portfolio and cover letter to jump out of the stack. Whether you’re targeting edge systems roles, embedded IoT edge jobs, edge-native data roles, edge platform engineering or edge-AI positions, this checklist will help you position your experience in a way hiring managers can trust immediately.
