The Opportunity

Copello are working with a leading defence engineering partner to recruit a Lead Mechanical Engineer for Air Purification and Atmosphere Monitoring systems. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the design and development of next-generation naval platforms within a major UK defence programme.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of air purification and atmosphere monitoring systems for complex marine environments.
  • Conduct functional design, modelling, and analysis of system components and sub-systems.
  • Produce design documentation, verification and validation evidence, and safety justifications.
  • Support the specification, qualification, and procurement of system components in collaboration with suppliers.
  • Engage with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders across engineering, procurement, and project functions.
  • Provide technical leadership through peer reviews, design reviews, and mentoring of junior engineers.

Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Proven experience in the design of gas scrubbing, filtration, or environmental control systems (e.g. CO₂ removal, O₂ generation, contaminant management) within safety-critical sectors such as defence, aerospace, nuclear, or oil & gas.
  • Strong understanding of system lifecycle delivery, from concept through to commissioning.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability, whether through project ownership, mentoring, or technical authority.
  • Chartered Engineer status (or working towards).

Desirable:

  • Awareness of platform-level constraints such as noise, shock, and survivability.
  • Experience integrating air purification systems with broader life-support, HVAC, or emergency response systems.
