About BigSis

BigSis (www.bigsis.tech), a UK start‑up, is applying robotics and artificial intelligence to transform the production of sterile male insects, which are used for chemical‑free control of pest insects. BigSis has developed a pilot automated production line and is now focused on scaling to millions of insects per week.

We look to attract candidates who can demonstrate behaviours in sync with our company values:

  • Trustworthy – Includes honesty, integrity, respect and being approachable
  • Growth mindset – Learn and grows & embraces challenges
  • Succeeding together – Collaborate and celebrates success together

Purpose and responsibilities

The Mechanical Engineer will join an innovative, dynamic and forward‑thinking team. In this role, you’ll contribute to the development of automated production systems for sustainable agriculture, playing a key role in the design, integration, and optimization of mechanical components.

Key Responsibilities

  • Component Design & Development: Take ownership of the design and development of specific mechanical components and modules within the automation system.
  • System Optimization: Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to troubleshoot and improve existing systems, ensuring they meet operational needs.
  • Collaboration & Mentorship: Work closely with junior engineers, offering guidance and technical support to foster a collaborative environment.
  • Process & Tool Refinement: Contribute to refining BigSis’ engineering processes, tools, and methodologies to improve the efficiency and quality of the development process.
  • Continuously optimizing the design to meet operational requirements, working closely with other engineering teams to solve complex challenges.

About the Role

In this hands‑on position, you’ll be:

  • Designing innovative mechanical systems, particularly for handling and processing insect containers within the automated production line.
  • Integrating mechanical systems with electronics and software, ensuring smooth interaction between components across the processing module.
  • Continuously optimizing the design to meet operational requirements, working closely with other engineering teams to solve complex challenges.

Qualifications and experience

We’re seeking someone who thrives in a start‑up environment and is comfortable delivering functional, "good-enough" solutions under time pressure—while continuously refining and improving the systems over time.

Essential – for the role

  • 2:1 degree in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent
  • Hands‑on experience designing and implementing functional mechanisms for automation and handling of small objects
  • Solution oriented with an ability to think outside the box
  • At least 3+ years’ experience in a relevant mechanical system and subsystem component design

Desirable experience

  • Worked on systems where components needed to be designed for manufacturing and precise assembly/operating tolerances
  • Design of high‑speed automated material transfer systems
  • Designed robust, ruggedised and precision mechanical systems for 24/7 operation with minimal down time
  • General understanding and hands‑on experience with workshop equipment
  • Completed projects using rapid prototyping technologies such as 3D printing
  • Designed low‑power automated systems and/or equipment, e.g. animatronics, vending machines, automated food or pharmaceutical production
  • Worked with stepper motors, servo motors, automatic material handling systems
  • Project management skills or certification
  • Designed and assembled electronic circuits, electrical panels and/or PCBs
  • Worked in an environment with hygiene and/or regulatory requirements, such as the food, cosmetics or medical sectors
  • Competent with SolidWorks software

Personal attributes

  • Energy, ambition and commitment to ensure the job gets done
  • Honesty, integrity and openness to ensure we build a great company culture
  • Flexibility to changes in priorities and adaptability to new ideas
  • Out of the box thinking and ‘can do’ attitude
  • Team player who creates and thrives in a collaborative environment
  • Effective communication skills

Additional Note

To be comfortable working with live insects, including spending time in the hot and humid insect rearing area. Insects and their growth cells are very small, so you need good fine work skills.

Application Process

To be considered for this role, please send a CV and cover letter to explaining why you think you are the right person for this job. Please include information about your education, work experience and current salary.

BigSis is an equal opportunities employer. Applicants will be considered without attention to age, sex, race, disability, pregnancy, marital status, sexual orientation, gender reassignment and religious background.

New Edge Computing Employers to Watch in 2026: UK and Global Companies Shaping Edge Innovation

Edge computing is transforming how data is processed by bringing compute power closer to the source of generation. With the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT), real‑time analytics, autonomous systems, and latency‑sensitive applications, edge computing has moved from a niche discipline to a core component of digital infrastructure. In 2026, organisations that specialise in or heavily invest in edge computing are expanding their teams to build distributed systems, real‑time analytics platforms, and edge‑optimised AI. For professionals exploring opportunities on www.EdgeComputingJobs.co.uk , understanding which employers are growing, winning contracts, or securing investment is essential. This article highlights the new and high‑growth edge computing employers to watch in 2026, including UK startups, international innovators with a UK presence, and established companies shifting strategy toward edge.

How Many Edge Computing Tools Do You Need to Know to Get an Edge Computing Job?

If you’re trying to start or grow a career in edge computing, it can feel like you’re navigating a maze of tools, frameworks and platforms — Kubernetes, Docker, IoT frameworks, AWS Greengrass, Azure IoT Edge, OpenShift, TinyML toolkits, networking orchestration, real-time streaming frameworks, and on it goes. Scroll job boards and community forums and it’s easy to conclude that unless you master every buzzword imaginable, you’ll never get a job. Here’s the honest truth most edge computing hiring managers won’t necessarily say out loud: 👉 They don’t hire you because you know every edge computing tool — they hire you because you can solve real system problems using the tools you know. Tools matter, yes — but only when they support clear outcomes: reliable systems, performance at scale, secure edge deployments and real business value. So how many edge computing tools do you actually need to know to secure a job? For most edge computing roles, the answer is fewer than you think — and a lot clearer when sorted by fundamentals and roles. This guide shows you what matters, what doesn’t, and how to focus your time wisely so you come across as capable, confident and employable.

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Edge Computing Job Applications (UK Guide)

In today’s fast-evolving tech landscape, edge computing is one of the most sought-after fields — blending distributed systems, embedded systems, networking, cloud, IoT, data and real-time processing. But that also means hiring managers are highly selective. They scan applications fast and look for signals of relevance, impact, technical depth and real-world delivery long before they read every line. This guide demystifies what hiring managers in edge computing look for first in your application — so you can tailor your CV, portfolio and cover letter to jump out of the stack. Whether you’re targeting edge systems roles, embedded IoT edge jobs, edge-native data roles, edge platform engineering or edge-AI positions, this checklist will help you position your experience in a way hiring managers can trust immediately.
