Job Title: Mechanical Engineer

Reports to: R&D Manager


Position Summary

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, testing and improving mechanical systems and products. The role is varied and requires strong analytical abilities, hands-on engineering experience, and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes and industry standards. The applicant must be experienced with electro-mechanical products, be able to multi-task, and work well against deadlines. The position is located at the company’s facility in Reading.


Key Responsibilities

  • Using 3D CAD, design industrial, computer controlled machinery to provide solutions to customer challenges within the Geotechnical Testing industry;
  • Perform mechanical engineering calculations (limits and fits) and stress analysis (FEA) on proposed designs/concepts;
  • Generate detail manufacturing drawings, BOM’s, Engineering Datasheets, Paint Schedules, Inspection and Test narratives etc.;
  • Ensure all products meet safety and machinery directives and drawings are created to BS8888 standards
  • Conduct / participate in design reviews of mechanical systems and prototypes including graphical renders and 3D models;
  • Use of FMEA to understand risk and develop clear test / actions plans to mitigate;
  • Ensure strict adherence to company H&S policy and standards, and ensure that industry best practice and standards in this regard are followed, e.g. risk assessments;
  • Provide input and advice to other team members during the development and manufacturing of physical prototypes for testing;
  • Identify opportunities for improvement with existing products and process, through feedback, analysis, and testing;
  • Provide engineering and technical support for the layout, design and evaluation of equipment including the checking of drawings and other related engineering documents;
  • Work effectively with the Operations Department on sourcing, availability, and pricing of product estimates;
  • Work effectively with suppliers and communicating with staff or customers to identify technical requirements;
  • Presenting designs to management and clients;
  • Any other duties or tasks as assigned by the company.


Experience, Qualifications & Skills:

  • Minimum 2.1BSc or BEng level in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent);
  • Minimum 5 years industry experience in machinery design;
  • Solidworks 2021 experience with SolidWorks PDM Server (or equivalent 3D CAD);
  • Understanding engineering materials and manufacturing practices;
  • FEA using Solidworks (or equivalent package);
  • Understanding of electro-mechanical / mechatronic systems and components;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively present complex topics in a concise manner;
  • Ideal candidate must be able to manage multiple projects at one time and adhere to strict deadlines;
  • Team player with the ability to problem solve effectively and collaboratively;
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to learn in-house design practices and procedures;
  • Willing and able to deliver coherent technical discussions on design matters;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with people at all levels and in a variety of functions;
  • Excellent organizational, time management skills, and with a good work ethic

Compensation:

  • Base salary, depending on candidate experience
  • 21 days annual leave plus public holidays.
