Mechanical Design Engineer (Contract – 6 Months)

Location: Crawley, West Sussex (On-Site)


We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer for a 6-month on-site contract based in Crawley. This role will support a fast-paced engineering programme delivering innovative mechanical systems within a regulated, quality-driven environment.


This opportunity is well suited to contractors who are comfortable owning designs end-to-end and integrating quickly into established engineering teams.


Key Responsibilities

  • Produce detailed 3D CAD models and manufacturing drawings
  • Lead mechanical design from concept through to production release
  • Perform tolerance analysis, FEA validation, and design optimisation
  • Support DfMA (Design for Manufacture & Assembly) initiatives
  • Collaborate closely with electronics, manufacturing, and supply chain teams
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and technical documentation
  • Ensure compliance with relevant UK and international standards

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong 3D CAD capability (SolidWorks, Creo, or Inventor)
  • Proven experience delivering mechanical design projects on a contract basis
  • FEA and simulation experience (ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation, or similar)
  • DfMA and cost-reduction engineering experience
  • Knowledge of sustainable design and material optimisation
  • Understanding of UKCA and CE compliance requirements
  • Experience within regulated industries (aerospace, defence, medical, energy, or advanced manufacturing)
  • BOM creation and PLM system experienceStrong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Automation or robotics system design
  • Mechatronics integration
  • Rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing
  • Digital engineering or model-based design exposure
  • Experience improving manufacturing efficiency or reducing environmental impact

Ideal Contractor Profile

  • Available immediately or on short notice
  • Comfortable working fully on-site in Crawley
  • Able to operate autonomously with minimal supervision
