Our Marine business is offering an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join the RAS/FAS Value Stream team at our Gateshead, UK office.


As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you’ll be at the forefront of the marine industry, applying your skills and experience in an environment where excellence is the standard.


In this role, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team designing specialist naval deck machinery, including Replenishment At Sea (RAS) equipment, winches, reelers, and cranes. You’ll be involved throughout the entire product lifecycle—from interpreting customer requirements during tendering, through concept development and detailed design, to manufacturing support, testing, and installation aboard naval vessels.


Additionally, you will lead and contribute to research and development initiatives, ensuring our products remain at the cutting edge of naval technology.


What you will be doing

  • Develop Mechanical Engineering solutions that fulfil client requirements. Progressing from requirements capture, through concept design to product development, commissioning and in-service support.
  • Identify and develop R&D and Continuous Improvement opportunities.
  • Investigate Safety and Technical problems using structured problem solving techniques.
  • Work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide technical reference / guidance to equipment suppliers, internal departments and customers.
  • Manage supplier interfaces and provide technical assistance / approval to suppliers.
  • Create technical design appraisal documents for submission to marine classification societies
  • Manage Requirements, Risks, Assumptions, Interfaces and Issues during all design phases.

We think you should have

  • BEng in a Mechanical Engineering discipline or equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience.
  • Engineering experience relevant to this role.
  • Experience of working in a highly regulated industry.
  • Applicants with previous experience in the marine or offshore oil and gas industry are preferred.
  • Experience spanning concept, product development and in-service (ILS) support.
  • Experience of creation of equipment assembly arrangements and Engineering Bills of Materials using the company ERP/MRP system.
  • Assessment of designs to ensure code compliance. Using both hand calculations and Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) to assess and optimise the product.
  • Production of technical specifications, test procedures and technical manuals for marine application mechanical systems and components.
  • Create technical equipment specifications, test procedures, design reports, test reports and service / instruction manuals in accordance with marine and military standards.
  • Experience of product development with 2D and 3D CAD systems such as AutoCAD and Creo.
  • Competent user of MS Office suite of programmes (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power-point etc.).
  • Conversant with BS EN 8888 and BS EN 22553 for the production of drawings.

Some of the contracts undertaken are for the UK Ministry of Defence and as such the successful candidate will be required to successfully attain UK BPSS or SC Clearance with no caveats. Please note that this might affect the offer process or employment.
