Job Type: Full‑time, Permanent


A growing engineering company based in Ely, Cambridgeshire is looking to recruit a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of high‑precision mechanical systems.


This role offers the opportunity to work on technically advanced products involving precision motion control and vibration isolation systems, taking designs from concept through to production.


The Role

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a key part in the design, development and testing of mechanical mechanisms. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure designs meet performance, manufacturing and compliance requirements.


The role will involve supporting the full product development lifecycle, from initial concept and design through testing, validation and release into production.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design and improve mechanical mechanisms for precision motion control and vibration isolation systems
  • Develop, assemble, test and evaluate theoretical designs using a concurrent engineering approach
  • Produce detailed product specifications based on analysis of test data
  • Work closely with colleagues, suppliers and manufacturing teams to identify root causes of technical issues and implement solutions
  • Ensure Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles are incorporated into designs
  • Ensure compliance and regulatory requirements are considered throughout the design process
  • Ensure products can be manufactured reliably and perform consistently in specified operating conditions
  • Plan and oversee product development activities to ensure project deadlines are achieved
  • Consider cost, compliance, safety and time constraints when developing solutions
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to support knowledge transfer into production

Skills & Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Experience in product development with a track record of products released into production
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Understanding of machinery directive safety legislation and compliance regulations
  • Experience with 3D and 2D CAD modelling tools
  • Ability to produce detailed manufacturing drawings with tolerances and finishing specifications
  • Experience designing precision components to tight tolerances
  • Strong understanding of material selection for mechanical assemblies
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve technical issues quickly
