We are currently looking for Principle Design Engineers.


The Company

Vital Energi are at the forefront of the UK's low‑carbon energy‑generating systems of the future. We work in the construction industry, in a rapidly expanding market for Heat and Power Solutions from renewable energy. As a leading turnkey engineering contractor, we design, construct, install, operate and maintain environmentally friendly energy‑generating systems and networks.


The Role

Reporting to the Principal Engineer (CSA), this role involves a broad range of detailed design including district heating excavation, tunnelling and support design, energy centre design, and general foundation, pipe support, builders‑work design. It includes taking concept designs and producing a fully detailed design for the projects team to install, and may involve initial project conceptual work, site investigations, client meetings and input into project submissions and presentations.


Working within a team of different grades of construction design professionals you will be responsible for delivering the construction design across multiple teams and projects including energy centre layouts, structural steel details, architectural details, and planning/building‑regulations submissions. Other key duties involve writing specifications for procurement of construction products and services, and liaising with all internal and external design disciplines to deliver a fully coordinated solution. Familiarity with industrial and commercial construction and refurbishment technologies is essential.


Key Duties

  • Produce the design of energy centres & associated construction infrastructure up to the point of handover.
  • Develop the design staff and teams with a ‘hands‑on’ approach to meet quality standards and strict deadlines.
  • Review cost implications within design, undertake lifecycle costing analysis, and value engineering.
  • Effectively deal with design issues and minimise their impact.
  • Liaise with internal and external designers, customers, and Vital Energi’s in‑house project teams; lead multi‑disciplinary design & coordination reviews providing technical due diligence.
  • Demonstrate awareness and appreciation of other disciplines including mechanical and electrical.
  • Fluency with BIM and the ability to coordinate multi‑disciplines with our in‑house CAD team.
  • Proactively ensure compliance with CDM requirements and our in‑house design processes.
  • Conduct and contribute to HAZOP studies, risk assessments, etc.
  • Fluency with current Building Regulations, industry guidance such as RIBA, RICS, ICE, and all pertinent legislation.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, engineering best practices in line with company procedures such as Building Safety Act, CDM 2015, and Principal Designer duties.
  • Assist in specifying construction aspects for tendering works.
  • Work closely with the client to further develop relationships and promote the company.
  • Undertake site inspection reports and provide technical support during construction.

The Person

The successful candidates should be qualified at Degree level, with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a design/build environment.



  • Construction industry professional (Chartered or working towards).
  • Experience contributing to design risk reviews.
  • Experience with training and mentoring construction design staff.
  • Sound understanding of design principles including steel frame, reinforced concrete and traditional construction methods.
  • Fluency with current Building Regulations.
  • Fluency with National Design Specifications (NES/NBS) and competent in AutoCAD 2D.
  • Effective communicator, confident and focused, managing time and duties professionally.
  • Excellent technical ability and written & verbal communication skills.
  • Fluent with the RIBA Plan of Work and relevant design standards and stages.
