We are looking for a skilled and motivated Estates Maintenance Technician to join a busy team, supporting the safe and efficient running of our healthcare environment. This is a hands‑on, varied role where no two days are the same — perfect for someone who enjoys problem‑solving, taking initiative and making a real difference to patient and staff safety.

As part of the Estates team, you will help deliver effective day‑to‑day maintenance, defect and breakdown responses, and planned preventative maintenance across the Trust. You will contribute to creating a safe, compliant and comfortable environment for patients, staff and the public.

This role includes elements of multi‑skilling and may involve on‑call duties to support emergency repairs outside normal working hours.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver maintenance, repairs, minor improvements and capital works across Trust sites.

  • Work to statutory requirements including HTMs such as HTM 06‑03, 02, 03‑01, 04‑01, HTM 2030, HTM 2010 and others relevant to clinical engineering environments.
  • Follow the Trust’s Permit to Work systems and ensure safe access control in hazardous areas.
  • Carry out risk assessments and ensure high safety standards at all times.
  • Support on‑call rotas to provide timely emergency repair response.
  • Undertake planned preventative maintenance and produce statutory test records and documentation.
  • Use and monitor the Building Management System (BMS) to identify faults and improve energy efficiency.
  • Liaise with Maintenance Officers, contractors, and store personnel as required.

Communication & Teamwork
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, managers, contractors and clinical areas to negotiate access and organise works.
  • Share knowledge and support maintenance craftsmen and assistants.
  • Provide clear, professional communication to staff, patients and members of the public.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.

Planning & Organisation
  • Manage your own workload via PDA and respond to ad‑hoc jobs requiring immediate attention.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are clean, safe and well maintained.
  • Contribute to the development and review of Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Safely dispose of obsolete or redundant plant and equipment.

Additional Duties
  • Provide data for audits and surveys when required.
  • Report defects or hazards that may impact safety or operations.
  • Support policy updates and share ideas for improvement.
  • Maintain accurate paperwork including timesheets, job tickets and statutory test certificates.

What We're Looking For
  • Experience in a maintenance or engineering environment, ideally within healthcare (desirable but not essential).
  • Ability to work flexibly across the Trust, including participation in the on‑call rota.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Commitment to safe working practices and compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Willingness to undertake training, including specialist training for washer disinfectors and steam sterilisers.

Pay & Benefits
  • Hourly rate: £15.23
  • Opportunities for overtime and on‑call enhancements
  • Supportive team environment
  • Contribution to patient and public safety in a meaningful role

This is a temporary role for 6 - 8 weeks initially.

How Many Edge Computing Tools Do You Need to Know to Get an Edge Computing Job?

If you’re trying to start or grow a career in edge computing, it can feel like you’re navigating a maze of tools, frameworks and platforms — Kubernetes, Docker, IoT frameworks, AWS Greengrass, Azure IoT Edge, OpenShift, TinyML toolkits, networking orchestration, real-time streaming frameworks, and on it goes. Scroll job boards and community forums and it’s easy to conclude that unless you master every buzzword imaginable, you’ll never get a job. Here’s the honest truth most edge computing hiring managers won’t necessarily say out loud: 👉 They don’t hire you because you know every edge computing tool — they hire you because you can solve real system problems using the tools you know. Tools matter, yes — but only when they support clear outcomes: reliable systems, performance at scale, secure edge deployments and real business value. So how many edge computing tools do you actually need to know to secure a job? For most edge computing roles, the answer is fewer than you think — and a lot clearer when sorted by fundamentals and roles. This guide shows you what matters, what doesn’t, and how to focus your time wisely so you come across as capable, confident and employable.

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Edge Computing Job Applications (UK Guide)

In today’s fast-evolving tech landscape, edge computing is one of the most sought-after fields — blending distributed systems, embedded systems, networking, cloud, IoT, data and real-time processing. But that also means hiring managers are highly selective. They scan applications fast and look for signals of relevance, impact, technical depth and real-world delivery long before they read every line. This guide demystifies what hiring managers in edge computing look for first in your application — so you can tailor your CV, portfolio and cover letter to jump out of the stack. Whether you’re targeting edge systems roles, embedded IoT edge jobs, edge-native data roles, edge platform engineering or edge-AI positions, this checklist will help you position your experience in a way hiring managers can trust immediately.

The Skills Gap in Edge Computing Jobs: What Universities Aren’t Teaching

Edge computing is rapidly moving from niche concept to critical infrastructure. As organisations deploy connected devices, sensors, autonomous systems and real-time analytics, processing data closer to where it is generated has become essential. From smart cities and manufacturing to healthcare, transport, defence and telecommunications, edge computing underpins systems where latency, reliability and resilience matter. Demand for edge computing skills across the UK is rising steadily — yet employers consistently report difficulty finding candidates who are genuinely job-ready. Despite growing interest and academic coverage, universities are not fully preparing graduates for real edge computing jobs. This article explores the edge computing skills gap in depth: what universities teach well, what they consistently miss, why the gap exists, what employers actually want, and how jobseekers can bridge the divide to build sustainable careers in edge computing.
