Job Overview: Provide preventive and reactive maintenance services to Kidderminster Hospital and the Estate, grounds and gardens.


Key Duties

  • Carry out mechanical planned preventative maintenance work in accordance with Estates schedules and accepted good working practices.
  • Diagnose and repair faults in the hospital's mechanical installations and plant, including ventilation, heating, air conditioning and water systems.
  • Overhaul, renovate and repair worn, failed or damaged mechanical plant and installations.
  • Perform mechanical engineering tests or measurements in compliance with accepted standards and the Estates Department schedule of inspection.
  • Execute basic electrical fault diagnosis and repairs.
  • Participate fully in all relevant estates procedures and ensure completion of all necessary documentation.
  • Install and test new mechanical installations in accordance with current standards, good industry practice and hospital standards.
  • Advise other staff on the correct operation of equipment.
  • Record work information in the Planet FM management system.
  • Wear appropriate protective clothing, footwear, uniform, safety wear and equipment as required by the Trust.
  • Induct and instruct other staff on duties where necessary.
  • Provide assistance to other trade disciplines within the Estates Department.
  • Become fully conversant with the function of all mechanical and electrical systems within the Estates Department.
  • Participate in gritting and snow/ice clearance of the hospital roads and pavements.
  • Read, understand and work from engineering and architectural drawings.
  • Carry out all duties in a safe manner, respecting the safety of others.
  • Undergo all necessary health and safety training.
  • Carry out routine testing of essential systems (fire alarm, nurse call systems, boiler plant, generators).
  • Become conversant with the hospital's Building Management System, interpreting alarms, actioning and resetting them.
  • Participate in response/emergency teams for fire, major incidents and other emergencies requiring estates input.
  • Drive Trust vehicles as required.
  • Assist in the upkeep of a small mechanical material store and order components when necessary.
  • Maintain tidiness and a safe working environment in workshops and engineering plant rooms.
  • Operate any computerized systems used within the Estates Department.
  • Liaise with modern matrons, ward sisters and heads of departments regarding electrical maintenance and other estates matters.
  • Oversee mechanical contractors working on site, organising isolation of mechanical systems and issuing relevant permits.
  • Maintain documentation associated with the hospital's mechanical systems.
  • Perform any other duties relevant to the estates services as allocated by management.
  • Be available at short notice, out of normal hours, in emergency situations.
  • Carry out emergency lift procedures as required.

General Duties

Maintenance craftsmen will be employed on work appropriate to their core specialty and progressively trained to acquire elements of other skills, achieving a competent and flexible workforce.
