Mechanical Fitter Mechanical Engineering Technician HVAC Technician AC and Refrigeration Technician

Location: Manchester Oxford Road Campus (MFT) and Wythenshawe Hospitals

Pay: £15.88 - £17.91 (inclusive of weekly RRP where applicable) depending on experience.

Contract: Permanent, full-time (MonFri) with rota/on-call participation.

We’re looking for skilled Mechanical and HVAC professionals to join our expanding Hard FM teams across two Manchester healthcare sites. These roles play a vital part in ensuring safe, compliant and reliable building services that directly support patient care.

Whether your background is in mechanical systems, HVAC, air conditioning or refrigeration, you’ll join a collaborative Estates team delivering high-quality maintenance and technical support within a complex clinical environment. You’ll be working with a wide range of systems including heating, chilled water, ventilation, BMS controls, AC/refrigeration plant and associated mechanical infrastructure.

What You’ll Do

Across these positions, you’ll be responsible for a mix of planned, reactive and emergency engineering duties, including:

  • Delivering PPMs, statutory checks and testing across mechanical, HVAC or AC/refrigeration systems
  • Diagnosing faults and carrying out effective repairs on pumps, motors, chilled water, ventilation, heat exchangers, pressure systems and plant
  • Supporting safe system operation through BMS, CAFM and permit-to-work procedures
  • Completing installation, fabrication or pipework activities where required (role-dependent)
  • Ensuring compliance with HTMs, industry best practice and Sodexo/Trust Health and Safety and Infection Control standards
  • Responding to emergencies and prioritising workloads in high-pressure situations
  • Liaising with Estates colleagues, ward teams, contractors and Trust representatives
  • Keeping accurate records and asset histories
  • Participating in the engineering on-call rota (depending on role)

What You Bring

Skills And Experience

We’re looking for people who have a strong technical background and a commitment to safe, high-quality engineering. Depending on the role, you’ll bring:

  • A recognised apprenticeship/trade qualification in mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration or building services
  • NQF Level 3+, ONC/OND, BTEC or equivalent technical training
  • Experience maintaining mechanical, ventilation, HVAC or AC/refrigeration systems
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently, manage your workload and stay calm under pressure
  • Solid understanding of Health and Safety, risk assessments and safe systems of work
  • Good communication and the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams
  • Basic IT skills (e.g. Microsoft Office, use of CAFM systems)

Desirable

  • NHS or healthcare facilities experience
  • F-Gas certification (for AC/Refrigeration roles)
  • Welding/fabrication experience (for Mechanical roles)
  • Knowledge of HTMs or critical ventilation systems
  • Experience with BMS, BIM or CAFM software
