Generation Engineer (Mechanical Engineer)

We are looking for a Generation Engineer (Mechanical Engineer) to cover the south region, including Bath, Gloucester, and Slough areas.

Job Role

Reporting to Operations Manager.

The Company is seeking an experienced individual to maintain and repair large reciprocating internal combustion generators. Facilities range from 100kW to 20MWe, with the largest generator rating currently at 2.5MWe.

The premise of the role is to take responsibility for repair, maintenance, and ultimately operational availability for generation assets in the fleet. The goal is to maximise electrical production and reduce operational costs by taking responsibility—when commercially beneficial—for the operation and maintenance of as much plant and equipment as possible.

Key responsibilities include operating and maintaining our own generating assets, gas processing plant, and electrical systems to ensure safe electrical output and achieve maximum production.

The aim of the Company is to develop a successful, sustainable, and profitable business based on gas utilisation, O&M services, solar, and energy storage.

The company is committed to maintaining clean, safe, and well‑run facilities that exceed performance targets and satisfy customer expectations. Detailed written intervention records are essential.

  • Replace worn components as required due to wear, failure, or schedule—e.g., cylinder heads, piston/liner packs, turbochargers, exhaust and induction systems, oil pumps, and intercoolers.
  • Lead the overhaul of reciprocating generating assets.
  • Day‑to‑day maintenance and operation, including fault location, diagnosis, and rectification.
  • Planned maintenance delivery and breakdown response for generation assets, with minimum outages.
  • Seek guidance and advice from Engineering and Management teams when unsure.
  • Avoid unnecessary expenditure by using available skills and tools.
  • List and order correct components, gaskets, and incidentals for scheduled overhaul and repairs.
  • Ensure a stock of essential spare parts is replenished and available for breakdowns or unscheduled overhaul.
  • Commitment to Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental practices, following all procedures and using judgement.
  • Reduce reliance on contractors where economically prudent.
  • Compliance and implementation of legislation and company protection procedures, with proactive monitoring, reporting, and auditing.
  • Continuous enhancement of skills and knowledge, and that of team members working with you.
  • Manage time and travel effectively, minimizing home time when appropriate.
  • Utilise and comply with company operations and maintenance procedures, manuals, record keeping and stock control systems.
  • Execute all generation asset maintenance and overhaul, using Operations staff for minor/major maintenance as required.
  • Perform maintenance and repair of mechanical, heat, and electrical plant, including pumps and motors.
  • Recommission overhauled assets and associated equipment.
  • Conduct emissions monitoring of generation assets.
  • Train, support, and supervise area staff for maintenance and simple fault finding.
  • Provide emergency call‑out cover for generation asset failure/outage.
  • Order and control spares and stock.
  • Maintain and inspect LV electrical equipment (subject to training and competency).
  • Operate HV switchgear (subject to training and competency).
  • Represent the company positively by maintaining clean, well‑run sites and engaging with customers and the public.
  • Supervise contractors.
  • Implement HSQE systems and comply with environmental protection procedures, proactively monitoring, reporting, and auditing company systems.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience leading the overhaul of reciprocating generating assets in a field service environment.
  • Knowledge of MWM/CATCG/MTU equipment.
  • Familiarity with electrical, heat, and mechanical maintenance.
  • Fault location, diagnosis, and rectification skills.
  • GasSafe accreditation (or ability to complete accreditation within probation).
  • Electrical skill or relevant experience in the field.
  • Knowledge of electric control systems 12 V DC, 415 V AC, 30 V.
  • Computer literate.
  • Full UK driver’s licence.

Edge Computing Recruitment Trends 2025 (UK): What Job Seekers Need To Know About Today’s Hiring Process

Summary: UK edge computing hiring has moved from tool‑lists to capability‑driven assessments that emphasise resilient edge architectures, real‑time data pipelines, secure device fleets, container/Kubernetes at the edge, on‑device/near‑edge ML, and measurable business impact (latency, reliability, cost‑to‑serve). This guide explains what’s changed, what to expect in interviews & how to prepare—especially for edge platform engineers, IoT/OT engineers, edge SREs, embedded/firmware engineers, edge AI/ML engineers, network engineers (5G/private LTE), security specialists & product managers. Who this is for: Edge platform/SRE, IoT solution architects, embedded/firmware developers, edge AI/ML engineers, network engineers (5G/SD‑WAN), security engineers (OT/ICS), data/streaming engineers, site deployment/field engineers & edge product managers targeting roles in the UK.

Why Edge Computing Careers in the UK Are Becoming More Multidisciplinary

For years, computing innovation was focused on the cloud. But as demand for real-time analytics, low-latency processing and secure local data handling grows, edge computing has become the next frontier. From autonomous vehicles to healthcare monitoring devices, retail checkout systems to industrial IoT, edge computing is transforming how data is processed and used in the UK. This shift has also changed what it means to work in the field. Edge computing careers are no longer purely technical. They now require knowledge of law, ethics, psychology, linguistics & design, as professionals must consider regulation, human behaviour, communication & usability alongside engineering. In this article, we’ll explore why UK edge computing careers are becoming more multidisciplinary, how these five fields intersect with edge roles, and what job-seekers & employers need to know to thrive in this evolving landscape.

Edge Computing Team Structures Explained: Who Does What in a Modern Edge Computing Department

Edge computing is expanding rapidly in the UK, driven by demands for low latency, on-site processing, IoT proliferation, autonomous systems, 5G, AI inference on devices, and regulatory pressures for data sovereignty. Businesses in sectors such as telecoms, industrial automation, retail, smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and healthcare are pushing computation and intelligence closer to where data is generated. But to design, build, deploy, secure, and maintain edge computing systems requires more than just hardware or software — it requires structured teams with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. If you’re hiring, or applying for roles via EdgeComputingJobs.co.uk, understanding who does what in a mature edge computing department will help you plan better, show relevance in job applications, and build resilient teams. This article covers the key roles in edge computing teams, how they collaborate through the project lifecycle, what skills and qualifications UK employers usually expect, salary benchmarks, challenges and trends, and best practices for structuring effective edge teams.
