Job Summary

We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team. This post provides an unparalleled opportunity for senior trainees in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine to further their training in all aspects of Paediatric Cardiac Intensive Care with an emphasis on heart failure, mechanical support and transplantation. There are research opportunities in the fields of heart failure and mechanical support. The post is most suitable for trainees who are close to completion of training in PICM or post CCT; in particular those who would like to pursue a career in Paediatric Cardiac Intensive Care.


The start date for this post is May 2026 for 12 months. The post would be based on the Paediatric Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at Freeman Hospital with responsibility for outreach to paediatric cardiology patients on the Ward and a 6‑beded HDU when on call. On PICU the post holder is responsible for a 12‑beded quaternary Paediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.


About the Role

Responsibilities include:



  • Providing full‑time care in a 12‑bed “quaternary” Paediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and on‑call responsibilities for the paediatric cardiology ward.
  • Participation in the active mechanical support programme for children with end‑stage heart failure, including the second biggest Berlin Heart programme in the world.
  • Carrying out a research project/audit during tenure and presenting at national/international meetings.
  • Organising the departmental ECMO/mechanical support meetings and contributing to the related teaching programme.
  • Supporting the 48‑hour week full‑shift system within a hybrid rota of 9 personnel (together with trainees from Paediatric Cardiac Anaesthesia, Paediatric Intensive Care and Advanced Paediatric Critical Care Practitioners).

Training and Research Opportunities

The post offers clinical exposure to all aspects of Paediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Medicine and a senior role in clinical shifts. Trainees will have opportunities for research in mechanical support and heart failure, participation in departmental mechanical support and CHD research meetings, and involvement in mobile ECMO service, theatre, echo clinics, and protected teaching.

As a flexible working friendly organisation, we are developing our service provision to be responsive to patient needs. Some staff groups may be asked to work more flexible patterns, including evenings and weekends, if required.

Person Specification

  1. Education and Qualifications (Essential)

    • Primary Medical Qualification
    • MRCPCH / FRCA or equivalent; satisfactory completion of training to minimum of ST6 level or equivalent
    • Evidence of self‑reflective practice
    • Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this
    • 12‑18 months training in general paediatric intensive care, including 6 months of paediatric cardiac intensive care


  2. Interests and Experience (Desirable)

    • Intercalated BSc or equivalent; higher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD (where research thesis not part of full medical degree)
    • Experience of paediatric cardiology
    • APLS provider or equivalent
    • Wide paediatric/anaesthetic experience and neonatal intensive care training


  3. Clinical Skills and Knowledge (Essential)

    • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
    • Able to prioritise clinical need and work independently on PICU with consultant supervision
    • Proficiency in a range of medical procedures and management of medical emergencies
    • Good history and examination skills; ability to formulate a working diagnosis; order appropriate investigations and manage common medical emergencies
    • Knowledge of when to seek assistance from a senior colleague


  4. Maintaining Clinical Competence (Essential)

    • Written evidence of satisfactory training to date (e.g., workplace assessments)


  5. Teaching (Essential)

    • Able to contribute to teaching and learning of others in the clinical setting

    • Experience in teaching undergraduate medical students & junior doctors/nurses
