Craft Apprenticeship - Mechanical

Altrad are currently on the lookout for a Craft Apprenticeship – Mechanical to join the business to be involved in highly skilled, complex and precision work including Manufacture, Fabrication & Assembly of Bespoke Test Rigs and associated test equipment.


Year 1

Full‑time training at Glasgow Clyde College – Anniesland Campus (August–June)



  • SVQ Level 2 – Performing Engineering Operations
  • National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering

Years 2–3

Based in Renfrew



  • On‑the‑job training working towards SVQ Level 3
  • Mentored placement within the test/manufacturing facility
  • Development aligned to specific competencies
  • Regular reviews by an external accreditation/training body
  • Role‑specific training
  • Completion of Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 7

Years 3–6

  • Ongoing mentoring and competency development
  • Regular reviews and feedback

Progression toward fully qualified craft person status


Key Deliverables

  • Attend college classes, assessments, and examinations as required
  • Carry out technical activities under supervision
  • Uphold Altrad’s safety culture in all working environments
  • Maintain a personal logbook/portfolio to satisfy Modern Apprenticeship requirements
  • Support senior team members with project work as needed
  • Achieve personal development targets aligned with the Craft Apprenticeship scheme
  • Complete SVQ2 – Performing Engineering Operations and NC Mechanical Engineering in Year 1
  • Maintain logbook/portfolio for SVQ3 (Years 2–3) in line with SCQF Level 7 requirements
  • Support technical duties under guidance
  • Meet all health and safety obligations

During your apprenticeship, you may work with

  • Mechanical / Bench Fitting
  • Reading and interpreting Engineering drawings
  • Hydraulic / Pneumatic systems
  • Fabrication and Assembly of Test Rigs
  • Basic Machining processes
  • Use of Power and Hand Tools

Key Requirements

  • Minimum of 4 National 5s at grade B or above, including Maths, Physics, English, and one additional Science or Technical subject
  • Strong technical aptitude
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective teamwork
  • A willingness to learn and engage
