Job Summary

Are you a dynamic and experienced Consultant Clinical Scientist seeking a leadership role in a cutting‑edge Radiotherapy Physics department?


Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Humber Health Partnership, is seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to join our team as Head of Radiotherapy Physics Service, who also has responsibilities as part of the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Divisional Senior Leadership Team and the wider Radiotherapy Operational Delivery Network. This is an exceptional opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of radiotherapy services for a population of circa 1 million within the Humber, Coast and Vale region.


About the Role

As a key member of our Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Division, you will provide managerial and scientific leadership within this innovative Radiotherapy Physics service. You will work closely with the Group Head of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering to ensure the delivery of a high‑quality, safe, and effective service.


Main Duties

  • Providing expert scientific support and leadership for the clinical development of the radiotherapy service.
  • Contributing to research and development programmes, which have attracted national and international recognition.
  • Deputising for the Group Head of Medical Physics and Engineering, as directed.
  • Providing expert advice and guidance to a multidisciplinary team, including Clinical Consultants, Radiographers and technical support staff.
  • Managing staff, including appraisals, sickness/absence management and recruitment.
  • Responsibility for the training and development of staff across various levels.
  • Responsibility for service planning and strategy, including equipment procurement and implementation.

Salary and Contract

Band 8d – £91,342 to £105,337 a year, permanent, full‑time.


Person Specification
Education & Qualifications

  • Masters Degree (MSc) in Medical Physics, or equivalent experience.
  • Corporate Membership of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM).
  • Registration as a Clinical Scientist with HCPC.
  • Secretary of State recognised Medical Physics Expert (MPE); e.g. RPA2000 certified.

Desirable

  • Higher Degree (PhD).
  • Fellowship of IPEM.
  • Chartered Scientist (CSci).
  • Academy of Healthcare Science (AHCS) Higher Specialist Scientist Register (HSSR) or equivalent.
  • Leadership/Management qualification.

Knowledge, Training & Experience

  • Highly advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and experience in Radiotherapy.
  • Both routine provision and operational management of a service or significant section of a service.
  • Change management leadership.
  • Demonstrable practical experience as acting as a Medical Physics Expert for a radiotherapy service.
  • Project management for the planning/implementation of new systems or technologies.
  • In‑depth working knowledge of Quality Management Systems and similar governance tools.
  • Business management experience.
