Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist (Band 6)

The opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Specialist MSK Physiotherapist within the EPUT NHS Trust Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Team, for 25 hours per week (0.67 WTE) on a fixed‑term contract until 28 Jan 2027 to cover maternity leave.


Applicants must have a minimum of 2 years NHS experience as a physiotherapist, including MSK physiotherapy, and ideally Band 6 experience. The role involves clinical assessment and treatment within a multidisciplinary team of Band 7, 6, 5 clinicians, apprentices and rehabilitation instructors, working in conjunction with the Advanced Practice Team and First Contact Practitioners.

Role Summary

To be a specialist physiotherapist responsible for providing a high standard of assessment, advice, treatment and evaluation of patients referred to the Musculoskeletal Service, working autonomously in accordance with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy rules of professional conduct and the Health Professions Council regulations.


Key Responsibilities – Clinical

  1. Undertake a comprehensive assessment and formulate a diagnosis of patients with complex conditions, using clinical reasoning to select appropriate assessment techniques.
  2. Analyse assessment information to formulate an accurate prognosis and discuss agreed goals and outcomes with patients, setting realistic timelines.
  3. Explain the patient’s condition and proposed treatment, ensuring the patient understands and consents. Work within the legal framework when consent capacity is limited.
  4. Select and perform appropriate treatment techniques from a wide range of specialist skills (electrotherapy, manual techniques, exercise, hydrotherapy, appliances, manipulation, etc.) based on knowledge and experience.
  5. Demonstrate the physical ability to carry out physiotherapy assessment and interventions.
  6. Ensure safety of equipment, check or teach competency of junior therapists and non‑qualified staff.
  7. Produce clear written information and exercise programmes for patients and carers.
  8. Review and evaluate patient progress at each session, amending the programme as required.
  9. Plan and undertake discharge of patients when agreed goals are reached or treatment is no longer appropriate.
  10. Identify inappropriate referrals and refer on or back as needed.
  11. Produce timely, accurate patient records and reports in accordance with regulatory standards.

Communication Skills

  1. Use verbal, non‑verbal and written communication to ensure patients and carers understand their condition and the aims of physiotherapy, demonstrating empathy and persuasive skills.
  2. Present clinical information objectively to colleagues to contribute to high‑standard care.
  3. Communicate diagnosis effectively to medical doctors and other allied health professionals.
  4. Share information with a senior physiotherapist if there are concerns about patient safety, condition or progress.
  5. Report any concerns about staff or patient safety to senior staff promptly.
  6. Represent the physiotherapy service in meetings with other professionals, reporting relevant information to the line manager.

  1. Adapt communication, treatment, information and advice to meet individual patient needs, respecting culture, beliefs and emotions.
  2. Take a holistic view of the patient’s well‑being beyond a specific medical condition.
  3. Be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work.
  4. Support and guide junior physiotherapists and non‑qualified staff.
  5. Deputise for senior staff and delegate duties safely.
  6. Lead specific projects within own area of work to enhance patient care.
  7. Maintain high personal standards in line with professional and Trust policies.
  8. Actively participate in the physiotherapy team, recognising responsibilities to colleagues.
  9. Delegate tasks appropriately to junior staff, considering task complexity and competence.
  10. Understand and implement systems and procedures for smooth service operation.
  11. Manage and prioritise workload, delegating or arranging cover when needed.
  12. Efficiently manage a challenging caseload, demonstrating flexibility.
  13. Work efficiently in isolation for part of the week, with telephone links to senior team members.

Education and Research

  1. Participate in the Individual Performance Review (IPR) process, identifying learning needs.
  2. Attend mandatory training and comply with Trust policies.
  3. Continue to develop specialist physiotherapy skills in a specific field.
  4. Review service provision through audit, research, case studies and reflective practice.
  5. Maintain competence through ongoing CPD and reflective diary/portfolio, attending in‑service training and supervision.
