As a rotational Band 5 Physiotherapist you will gain experience in critical care, surgery, neuro rehabilitation, metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC), haematology and general oncology. You will assess and treat oncology inpatients within the Christie using clinical reasoning and skills under the guidance of Senior Physiotherapists.


Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver a high standard of therapy intervention to individuals following cancer surgery and treatments, and those requiring supportive or palliative care.
  • Contribute to the emergency on‑call rota, including overnight and weekend working.
  • Participate in the in‑service training rota and contribute to learning and development in the rehabilitation department.
  • Contribute to the clinical supervision of physiotherapy students.
  • Undertake physiotherapy assessment, clinically diagnose and implement treatment plans respecting patient privacy, dignity and individuality.
  • Rotate as part of the Band 5 rotation programme.
  • Be a member of the multi‑disciplinary team and actively participate in team meetings and joint working.
  • Ensure effective two‑way communication with patients, carers and other healthcare professionals, providing/retrieving complex information with empathy and reassurance, and communicating barriers to understanding.
  • Carry out generic therapy assessments, identifying and ordering appropriate equipment for discharge with guidance from senior physiotherapists and occupational therapists.
  • Maintain accurate professional documentation in line with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy standards and local policies, and contribute to documentation monitoring as required.
  • Liaise regularly with senior colleagues regarding caseloads, treatment progression and ongoing care.
  • Assist where necessary in providing cover for the department during annual leave or sickness.
  • Assess patients for specialist equipment such as wheelchairs, hoists and walking aids.
  • Ensure safe and competent use of all physiotherapy equipment and that assistants, students, carers and other professionals attain competency prior to use.
  • Produce timely and informative reports and discharge summaries for other agencies (e.g., GP’s, consultants, social services, primary care colleagues) to ensure seamless pathways of care.
  • Facilitate appropriate discharge planning alongside other members of the multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Contribute to the evening and weekend on‑call respiratory rota once competencies in this area have been demonstrated and assessed by the senior respiratory team.
  • Participate in flexible working to cover shift, evening, weekend and bank holiday services as required.
  • Be fully aware of and comply with the rules of professional conduct set out by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
  • Be professional, legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your work, including the management of patients in your care.
  • Remain up to date with new developments through ongoing continuous professional development.
  • Work within the guidelines of the policies, procedures and standards of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Be an active member of the in‑service training programme.
  • Measure and evaluate clinical practice through evidence‑based practice projects and audits, and initiate and implement changes to working practice and policies to improve performance and patient care.
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and risk management.
  • Ensure treatments offered to patients are based on the best available clinical evidence under the guidance of senior physiotherapists.
  • Attend relevant training courses, disseminate information from training attended as required, complete annual appraisals and a Personal Development Plan, and undertake regular training and mentoring sessions with senior staff to monitor and develop clinical and professional skills.
  • Teach and advise carers and other health professionals to ensure provision of good patient care.
  • Be responsible for a designated area of work as agreed with the physiotherapy team leaders.
  • Prioritise workload, balancing patient‑related and professional demands, and ensure these remain in accordance with the department as a whole.
  • Be responsible for equipment used in carrying out physiotherapy duties.
  • Comply with departmental and organisational procedures and guidelines.
  • Participate in the Trust's mandatory training programme.
  • Report any equipment, furniture or building in need of repair to the correct authority as necessary.
  • Participate in a 7‑day working model as necessary.
