Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner in Chronic Pain

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Advanced Practice Physiotherapist (Band 8a) to join the Pain Management Service at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust.


The post holder will provide highly specialist, autonomous physiotherapy assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with highly complex and persistent pain presentations.The role includes clinical leadership responsibilities, contribution to service development across sites, and acting as a source of expert clinical knowledge within the multidisciplinary pain team.


Non-medical prescribing is an essential part of this role and there is an expectation that the post holder will complete this additional course, if required. There is funding available for this.


The post holder will play an active role in service innovation, education, audit and research, supporting the ongoing development of high-quality pain services across the Trust.


Main duties of the job

  • Establish/develop cross-site specialist clinical services, engaging and influencing a range of key stakeholders across multiple professions and leading a small team of therapists within specialist area.
  • Provide an independent expert assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and advice to a highly complex and diverse range of patients. Including medication reviews and medication optimisation.
  • Act as a source of clinical expertise and highly advanced knowledge for physiotherapists and other health professionals.
  • In conjunction with other members of the MDT, to lead in various components of the development of the appropriate services and play an innovative and active part in developing the clinical service.
  • To co-ordinate research and development activity as a major job requirement, providing information into local and national frameworks/documents.
  • To provide expert advice and guidance through education both within the organisation and externally.

Job responsibilities

  • Carry a specialist clinical caseload and provide a consultative/second opinion service to other therapists in area of specialty.
  • Interpret and analyze clinical and non-clinical facts, which may be conflicting, to regularly provide expert advice and a second opinion to medical colleagues and other healthcare professionals. This includes the formulation of accurate prognoses, recommendation of best course of intervention and development of comprehensive discharge plans.
  • Lead for the organization on the delivery of clinical services in specialist area and be the voice not only for Physiotherapy, but for other professional groups in this area. This will require a highly visible presence in clinical areas cross site and close links with patient services, staff, Associate Directors and Chiefs of Service.
  • Provide expert opinion which informs the development of clinical pathways in collaboration with other multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Manage clinical risk within own caseload at all times and ensure clinical risk is effectively managed.
  • Communicate specialist information to a range of stakeholders both internally and externally which may require highly developed influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Lead the Physiotherapy professional development within area of speciality and ensure evidence-based practice is incorporated into the service.
  • Lead and evaluate necessary clinical policy changes within specialist area and provide specialist recommendations to local managers, Trust-wide, GP practices and national working parties.

Person Specification
Qualifications

  • Recognized degree or equivalent in relevant profession
  • HCPC Registration
  • Post graduate CPD in specialist clinical field.
  • MSc in related area or equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of relevant non-clinical management training e.g. financial training.

Experience

  • Significant clinical experience working at a senior level in own professional area.
  • Significant experience of delivering front line clinical care including managing the associated frequent distressing circumstances and occasional unpleasant working conditions associated with this.
  • Experience of investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Experience of contributing to the development of business plans and service development initiatives.
  • CBT/ACT training
  • To have presented clinical findings at an appropriate clinical forum or to have contributed to appropriate research developments.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of budget management, cost improvement and efficiency measures.
  • Team leadership including HR functions as well as teaching, mentoring and developing others.

  • Able to lead and facilitate meetings.
  • Well-developed interpersonal communication skills.
