2026 Mechanical Engineering Apprentice - Level 6 Electro-Mechanical Apprenticeship

Working Schedule: Monday - Friday, 37 hours a week (8 hours Monday - Thursday, 5 hours Friday)

Thales designs a range of state-of-the-art optronics solutions for the some of the most technically advanced defence platforms in the world.

As a Mechanical Engineer at our Templecombe site, you will work as part of a development team and be responsible for technical contributions towards leading edge Underwater naval based products. This is a great opportunity to work on state-of-the-art defence equipment and develop systems for the MoD and a wide range of export customers around the world. This position will challenge your skills, and you will have the flexibility to mould the role to suit your strengths and career development interests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • CAD design and development including:
    • Packaging of electronics and associated cabling
    • Designing for military platform installation
    • Producing key point manufacturing drawings in support of machine from model
    • Producing detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings
    • Understanding and designing for the effects of stress, shock and vibration
  • Environmental testing and product qualification
  • Design for manufacture for mechanical designs
  • Building prototypes for test and development


Apprenticeship Programme:

As a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice, you will be studying towards a BEng in Electro-Mechanical Engineering at Nottingham University, under the Level 6 Electro-Mechanical Degree Apprenticeship. For the duration of this 5-year programme, you will be given 1 day per week to focus on your academic studies and for the other 4 days, will be working in the business applying your new skills to real life projects. This programme is delivered via a blended learning model which includes some on campus taught content and some virtual learning. You will need to attend Nottingham University for minimum 4 weeks per academic year, delivered in 1-week blocks.

Upon completion of the programme, you will have achieved a BSc in Electro-mechanical Engineering, a Level 6-degree apprenticeship qualification and will move into a permanent role within the business. The degree is accredited by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

Requirements:

  • 3 A Levels (BBB) including Maths (the following A levels are not accepted: Citizenship Skills, General Studies and Critical Thinking). Or relevant engineering BTEC qualification, preceding level apprenticeship or T Level
  • 5 GCSE's 9-4 (A-C), Including Maths and English
