Senior Mechanical Design Engineer


Hours: Full Time
Salary: £40-50,000
Location: Birmingham


Penguin Recruitment are proud to represent a growing mechanical, electrical, and environmental design consultancy who are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its expanding building services team. The company delivers energy, sustainability, and building services design support across a wide range of developments and offers a collaborative, progressive working environment.


About the Role

You’ll work within a multidisciplinary team, providing design expertise, technical advice, and project support for both internal and external clients. This role is ideal for someone who is proactive, technically strong, and eager to contribute to continued business growth.


Key Responsibilities

  • Mechanical building services design across sectors including commercial, industrial, medical, retail, extra-care, residential, and mixed-use developments
  • Production of detailed drawings, reports, and specifications
  • Liaison with clients and project teams on technical matters
  • Project management and coordination activities
  • Supplier and contractor management
  • Promotion and integration of sustainable design principles
  • Use of industry-standard software tools
  • Competency with EDSL TAS
  • Strong understanding of British Standards, Codes of Practice, and other relevant guidance

Essential Skills & Qualifications

  • Relevant qualification in Building Services Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
  • Strong, demonstrable experience in mechanical building services design
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Ability to manage and prioritise workload effectively
  • Collaborative team player
  • Previous experience in building services design preferred
  • Ambition to develop both professionally and within the business

Desirable Skills & Qualifications

  • Membership in a relevant professional body (e.g., CIBSE)
  • Understanding of sustainable design principles
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Engineering Council registration
