We are recruiting for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Building Environments team in our London office. The role offers the opportunity to work on a varied portfolio of engaging and dynamic projects both in the UK and globally, including high-profile projects.


Our London Building Services (MEP) team is involved in a wide variety of challenging projects. Current projects include:



  • Marina Residential Tower, Athens – (Foster & Partners) – Greece’s tallest building and exemplar in sustainable design.
  • Barbican Renewal, London – (Allies & Morrison & Asif Khan Studios) – low energy refurbishment of an iconic modernist building.
  • Canning Town Masterplan – (Jestico & Whiles) – 1,750 homes as part of a 10ha urban regeneration masterplan.

BuroHappold's London Building Services team delivers cutting edge design solutions to encourage efficient use of materials, energy and natural resources. Our multidisciplinary environment enables engineers to push the boundaries of sustainable building technology across HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing in collaboration with practice-wide specialist groups.


Key Duties

We invite you to join our close-knit team as a Senior Mechanical Engineer, delivering sustainable and innovative design solutions for building services on a range of projects, primarily led by the London office, with delivery to our international portfolio. Duties include, but are not limited to:



  • Undertake detailed mechanical engineering building services design and calculations, using Revit and IES, with awareness of embodied carbon.
  • Embrace technologies to improve performance and sustainability toward net zero targets by 2030.
  • Ensure projects are delivered to an excellent standard, within deadlines and budget.
  • Represent Buro Happold at meetings with clients, other professionals and suppliers.
  • Produce and review reports, presentations, models and drawings to a high standard, with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Prepare technical specifications and schedules, design development reports and innovative design solutions.
  • Plan and manage input to Revit for production of design work.
  • Engage with colleagues across disciplines in group discussions, events and seminars.
  • Mentor junior team members, potentially leading to early line management.
  • Autonomously represent Buro Happold to clients, architects and collaborators.

Your Skills and Experience

As an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer, we expect you to demonstrate:



  • Relevant building services experience or credentials supporting sustainable building delivery.
  • Experience as a Lead Mechanical Engineer on projects.
  • Broad design knowledge from a range of projects, with familiarity with British, US and European codes of practice.
  • Experience using Revit and IES; willingness to learn new analysis tools as required.
  • Digital engineering skills (e.g., coding) would be advantageous.
  • Working towards, or Chartered Member of CIBSE or equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s degree (BEng/BSc) or Master’s degree (MEng/MSc) in a relevant discipline.
