Job Title: Senior Engineering Manager - Mechanical
Location: Liverpool, Merseyside, L12 2AP
Status: Permanent / Full Time / 40 hours

The Senior Engineering Manager leads the delivery of engineering and estates services for Alder Hey children's Hospital, ensuring compliance with statutory regulations, PFI contracts, and healthcare technical standards (HTMs/HBNs). The role combines strategic planning, operational leadership, and technical oversight to maintain safe, efficient, and high‑quality building services.

Responsibilities

  • Provide effective communication with all Managers, Senior Managers and Directors both within Mitie and the Trust; communicate complex information to electrical and mechanical engineering teams; liaise with external bodies, equipment suppliers, Architects, Consultants, NHS Estates, Medical Devices Agency, HSE and other government bodies, Police and Fire Brigade; negotiate outcomes and disseminate Mitie policies and briefings.
  • Ensure that all contractual and statutory requirements relating to buildings and their services are carried out and records kept.
  • Manage and undertake the duties of the Authorised Person in line with Mitie''s Site Authorised Person Matrix.
  • Interpret and implement highly complex technical documents and drawings generated by external bodies and organisations.
  • Formulate, develop and schedule strategic plans impacting across the whole site, considering current contractual and statutory requirements; develop risk management strategies for the Estates function in line with statutory requirements.
  • Participate in the out-of-hours Estates Management on-call rota; provide managerial and technical instruction to staff and coordinate additional staff/contractors as required to resolve incidents.
  • Lead and coordinate staff, maintain sound employee relations, high morale and motivation; provide technical guidance and leadership; in the absence of the Head of Estates, assume delegated responsibilities as required; promote safeguarding of children and young people in all service delivery and developments.
  • Oversee maintenance, repair and preservation of engineering services, plant and equipment within the contract to agreed standards, on time and within budget, ensuring safety for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Oversee regular inspections and specialist surveys; plan annual and long-term maintenance, lifecycle work, budgets, and option appraisals; implement the engineering services PPM system; maintain plant inventories and schedules; ensure contracts are value for money and updated annually.
  • Develop a proactive approach to delivering engineering/support services to continually improve time, quality and cost; manage environmental control related to discharges and regulatory permits.
  • Assist in the selection and appointment of Mitie staff; monitor competency, development and training; maintain an effective trades staff complement; draw up professional development plans for staff.

What we are looking for

  • Relevant certifications in FM & Engineering or related fields (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, IWFM).
  • Demonstrated experience in a technical leadership role, preferably within facilities management, particularly healthcare (HTM01-08).
  • AP qualifications are preferable.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles relevant to the operational context.
  • Experience in managing compliance with standards, processes, and procedures in alignment with Mitie''s Safe Systems of Work.
  • Expertise in developing and implementing audit action plans to address non-compliance effectively.
  • Ability to identify early warning signs of technical issues to reduce the likelihood of Non-Compliance Records (NCR).
  • Strong analytical skills to assess labour loads and determine necessary competency levels for technical roles.
  • Excellent communication skills to engage effectively with diverse teams, account directors, supply chain partners, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to build relationships and foster collaboration among teams.
  • Strong leadership abilities with a proactive approach to problem-solving and a focus on compliance and operational excellence.
  • Willingness to adapt to changing environments and embrace new challenges.
