In this permanent role you will be based in City, Country and report to Mark Wilson, Head of Engineering and Manufacturing, while collaborating with multiple internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design of complex turbomachinery components and sub–systems, from requirements definition through to release.
  • Create and release product definition in Siemens NX, with full lifecycle control in Teamcenter PLM.
  • Perform and oversee design optimisation using 1D hand calculations, 2D analyses, and 3D finite element simulations (structural, thermal, modal, fatigue).
  • Checking and approval of mechanical deliverables generated by other engineers to ensure compliance and quality.
  • Work with other specialists to define the mechanical sub–system requirements, including the best suitable machine architecture and achieving mechanical robustness through design.
  • Perform and oversee design optimization assessments by applying 1D hand calculation, 2D and 3D Finite Element Analyses.
  • Contribute and steer the development of Mechanical Design methods and tools.
  • Write and present project status updates to stakeholders as needed.
  • Providing technical guidance through effective coaching/mentoring of Team Members when required.
  • Ensure all applicable codes and standards such as BS, ASME, API, ISO, etc. are satisfied.
  • Work cross functionally with stakeholders to ensure the Coolbrook product offering is optimized for Mechanical Design.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years' experience in mechanical design engineering, with a strong background in turbomachinery and/or high–temperature static structures (e.g. casings, combustors, ducts, frames).
  • Deep knowledge of material properties and manufacturing processes for high–temperature alloys (nickel–based, stainless steels, etc.).
  • Experience applying thermo mechanical analysis and design methods to both rotating and static components, including life assessment (creep, fatigue, LCF/HCF).
  • Proven ability to apply analytical approaches and first principles methods, with strong data interpretation skills and a solution oriented mindset.
  • Proficiency in Siemens NX and lifecycle management in Teamcenter PLM.
  • Demonstrated capability in engineering product definition, from 2D drawings through to model based definition.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical reports and presentations.
  • Effective collaborator in multi disciplinary teams, but equally capable of working independently with minimal supervision.

Advantageous Skills

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering (preferably a higher degree).
  • Professionally registered with a relevant engineering institution, preferably at or working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Experience working in a fast paced technology development engineering environment would be highly advantageous.
  • Experience working in R&D or SME roles where engineering process and procedures are yet to be defined and one must refer to first principles regularly would be highly advantageous.
  • Experience of Python or other similar coding languages, and their application in the streamlining/automation of simple and/or repetitive tasks would be highly advantageous.

About Coolbrook

Named Tech Champion 2022 in the Manufacturing category by The Financial Times and 2025 BNEF Pioneer by the Bloomberg New Energy Finance, Coolbrook is a transformational technology and engineering company on a mission to decarbonise major industrial sectors like petrochemicals and chemicals, iron and steel, and cement. Coolbrook's revolutionary rotating technology combines space science, turbomachinery and chemical engineering to replace burning of fossil fuels across all major industrial sectors.

The technology has two main applications: RotoDynamic ReactorTM (RDRTM) to reach 100% CO2 free olefin production, and RotoDynamic HeaterTM (RDHTM) to provide carbon free process heating to iron and steel, cement and chemicals production. Once implemented at scale, the RotoDynamic Technology has the potential to reach temperatures of 1700 C and cut 2.4 billion tons (30%) of annual CO2 emissions in heavy industry. Edge Computing Recruitment Trends 2025 (UK): What Job Seekers Need To Know About Today’s Hiring Process

Summary: UK edge computing hiring has moved from tool‑lists to capability‑driven assessments that emphasise resilient edge architectures, real‑time data pipelines, secure device fleets, container/Kubernetes at the edge, on‑device/near‑edge ML, and measurable business impact (latency, reliability, cost‑to‑serve). This guide explains what’s changed, what to expect in interviews & how to prepare—especially for edge platform engineers, IoT/OT engineers, edge SREs, embedded/firmware engineers, edge AI/ML engineers, network engineers (5G/private LTE), security specialists & product managers. Who this is for: Edge platform/SRE, IoT solution architects, embedded/firmware developers, edge AI/ML engineers, network engineers (5G/SD‑WAN), security engineers (OT/ICS), data/streaming engineers, site deployment/field engineers & edge product managers targeting roles in the UK.

Why Edge Computing Careers in the UK Are Becoming More Multidisciplinary

For years, computing innovation was focused on the cloud. But as demand for real-time analytics, low-latency processing and secure local data handling grows, edge computing has become the next frontier. From autonomous vehicles to healthcare monitoring devices, retail checkout systems to industrial IoT, edge computing is transforming how data is processed and used in the UK. This shift has also changed what it means to work in the field. Edge computing careers are no longer purely technical. They now require knowledge of law, ethics, psychology, linguistics & design, as professionals must consider regulation, human behaviour, communication & usability alongside engineering. In this article, we’ll explore why UK edge computing careers are becoming more multidisciplinary, how these five fields intersect with edge roles, and what job-seekers & employers need to know to thrive in this evolving landscape.

Edge Computing Team Structures Explained: Who Does What in a Modern Edge Computing Department

Edge computing is expanding rapidly in the UK, driven by demands for low latency, on-site processing, IoT proliferation, autonomous systems, 5G, AI inference on devices, and regulatory pressures for data sovereignty. Businesses in sectors such as telecoms, industrial automation, retail, smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and healthcare are pushing computation and intelligence closer to where data is generated. But to design, build, deploy, secure, and maintain edge computing systems requires more than just hardware or software — it requires structured teams with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. If you’re hiring, or applying for roles via EdgeComputingJobs.co.uk, understanding who does what in a mature edge computing department will help you plan better, show relevance in job applications, and build resilient teams. This article covers the key roles in edge computing teams, how they collaborate through the project lifecycle, what skills and qualifications UK employers usually expect, salary benchmarks, challenges and trends, and best practices for structuring effective edge teams.
