Job Overview

We are recruiting for a Multi‑Skilled Technician – Mechanical at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. The role is a permanent full‑time position (40 hrs per week) based at the hospital site and may also need to cover Burnley General Hospital. The Technician will be responsible for the technical performance and maintenance of mechanical systems, providing guidance to others on site, and ensuring efficient customer service delivery.


The role requires a full driving licence, compliance with health & safety, and the opportunity to become an Authorised Person/Responsible Person in relevant disciplines.


Responsibilities

  1. Provide an effective and efficient maintenance repair service across building fabric, electrical and mechanical engineering and electro‑medical services, plant and equipment, including complex systems such as boilers, DHW, HVAC, fire, security, medical gas, lifts, and theatre equipment.
  2. Work in accordance with statutory requirements, technical guidance and codes of practice.
  3. Carry out planned preventive maintenance inspections and commissioning tests as per procedures and schedules.
  4. Maintain the following systems and plant:

    • Steam and condensate systems and pressure systems (a)
    • Coldwater and DHW systems, distribution pipework (b)
    • Control of legionella in water systems (c)
    • Hydraulic, pneumatic and vacuum systems (d)
    • Piped medical gas and medical air (e)
    • Commercial/industrial laundry equipment (f)
    • Heating, ventilation (air handling units) and air conditioning (g)


  5. Be knowledgeable in all site engineering and building services.
  6. Interpret technical drawings and specifications, carry out fault diagnosis and repair specialist trust engineering equipment, assist in commissioning, and communicate technical information.
  7. Assist or liaise with Emergency Services for incidents, support Trust Fire Team and Major Incident Team, and advise senior management on maintenance issues outside normal office hours.
  8. Carry out statutory testing and complete all required reports and certificates.
  9. Drive appropriate Trust vehicles for transporting personnel or equipment.
  10. Work safely in hazardous areas, confined spaces and contaminated equipment, following risk assessments and treatment plans.
  11. Prioritise workload and manage performance information system, including timely paperwork.
  12. Ensure security of all plant, equipment and buildings under Equans FM Service.
  13. Maintain stock levels for spares and equipment and liaise with TSM/TSS for supplies.
  14. Follow relevant policies: Fire Safety, Infection Control, Health & Safety, COSHH, Manual Handling and safe systems of work.
  15. Use and maintain relevant tools and equipment safely.
  16. Carry out inspections for pre‑installations and investigate services for new equipment.
  17. Notify TSM/TSS of any problems that may endanger staff or the public.
  18. Cooperate with incident investigations and provide accident forms as required.
  19. Make independent decisions when required (self‑management).
  20. Supervise, communicate with and develop Maintenance Assistants, and support induction and training of new starters and apprentices.
  21. Participate in the provision of an on‑call service for plumbing and mechanical engineering services.

Qualifications (Essential)

  • Completed a recognised and accredited apprenticeship.
  • ONC/C&G or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in commercial/industrial building services maintenance.
  • Experience and understanding of large complex systems.
  • Experience working with AHU’s, Vent, FCU’s, LTHW, L8, pumps, pipework, valves and other mechanical systems.
  • Sound awareness of risk assessment and safe working with equipment.
  • Sound knowledge of Health & Safety.
  • Ability to measure, work to plans (method statements) and read technical diagrams.
  • Experience with PPM & reactive work.

Qualifications (Desirable)

  • Use of a Building Management System (BMS).
  • Experience with pressure systems / steam raising boiler plant.
  • HVAC experience.
  • Competent Person / Authorised Person experience.
  • Healthcare experience (advantage).

Training & Development

  • Continual professional development through in‑company training programmes.
  • Training to become an Authorised Person/Responsibility Person in relevant disciplines (at least competent level).
  • Training in correct lifting techniques, heavy lifting, scaffolding, ladders and high access equipment.
  • Participation in body‑by‑body training to keep skills current.
