TL;DR

  • Solve hardware problems end-to-end: design, prototype, build, integrate, and test new robotic components.
  • Jump into unfamiliar domains - one day developing high torque actuators, the next debugging depth perception sensors.
  • Work closely with Paddington’s other engineers, product, and customer teams to iterate and improve solutions.
  • Deliver real-world impact, today, using cutting-edge robotics.

About Paddington Robotics

At P9R7, we’re building robots that can handle the messy, unpredictable and chaotic real world. We are undertaking customer trials, and need your help to deliver on this challenge.

  • Build AI models and hardware that let robots work safely alongside humans - lifting, moving, and getting stuff done better and faster.
  • Spend time on customer sites, to better understand and solve for the messy chaos of most environments.
  • Think 10+ years ahead, reimagining manual labour and creating robots that become complementary assistants for labour intensive and physically demanding tasks.

We’re a team from Amazon, InstaDeep, Imperial, UCL, and Cambridge to name a few, united by one of the founders of Magic Pony (acquired by Twitter).

Mechatronics Robotics Engineer @ Paddington Robotics

We’re looking for a Mechatronics Robotics Engineer for the mechanical design and integration of components in our robotics system. You’ll be at the heart of ensuring a seamless integration of hardware and software.

One week, you might be leading the mechanical design and integration of new components – motors, drive systems, sensors, or structural frames. You’ll leverage CAD modeling, part selection, and rapid prototyping to iterate quickly and effectively. The next week, you might be integrating new wheels to test and tune control systems, from motion control and motor feedback to kinematics. You’ll rapidly become familiar with troubleshooting our robots and driving iterative improvement of our systems.

You’ll work hand-in-hand with our Senior Hardware Engineer and Software Engineers. The role is flexible and can grow in whichever direction you want: specialising in control, solving problems on customer sites, contributing to new product development – or a mix of all three.

About You

  • You live and breathe mechatronics: Degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • You have 1-2 years of hands‑on robotics or automation experience: from projects, internships, industry – or a startup (even better!).
  • You’ve got a broad range of experiences: control theory, microcontrollers, PCB design, writing scripts in Python or MATLAB to support your designs.
  • You enjoy hands‑on prototyping: 3D printing, machining, laser cutting, or using basic shop tools.
  • You’re a CAD power user (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar) and comfortable with embedded systems (Arduino, ESP32, STM32).
  • You’re a fast learner and love working with others: sharing knowledge, learning/teaching others, and embracing feedback.
  • You’re a practical problem solver: you can take your expertise and tackle engineering challenges in messy, real‑world environments.

Above all, we’re building a team of creative, outside‑the‑box thinkers. To thrive here, you are:

  • Highly ambitious: comfortable taking a project from concept to completion – you do whatever it takes to win.
  • Self‑directed and proactive: you thrive in a dynamic, unpredictable, multi‑disciplinary environment.
  • Enthusiastic team players: you ask questions, help others, and communicate effectively.

What Will Impress Us

We love proactive doers. Show us what you’ve built – whether it’s projects, or experiments. Tell us why our mission excites you. Be bold, be creative, and don’t feel embarrassed to stand out from the crowd.

Location

Our London office is right by Portobello Road. We work full‑time, and largely on‑site (4 days a week). Expect vibrant startup energy with a team that knows when to laugh, and when to buckle down.

Edge Computing Recruitment Trends 2025 (UK): What Job Seekers Need To Know About Today’s Hiring Process

Summary: UK edge computing hiring has moved from tool‑lists to capability‑driven assessments that emphasise resilient edge architectures, real‑time data pipelines, secure device fleets, container/Kubernetes at the edge, on‑device/near‑edge ML, and measurable business impact (latency, reliability, cost‑to‑serve). This guide explains what’s changed, what to expect in interviews & how to prepare—especially for edge platform engineers, IoT/OT engineers, edge SREs, embedded/firmware engineers, edge AI/ML engineers, network engineers (5G/private LTE), security specialists & product managers. Who this is for: Edge platform/SRE, IoT solution architects, embedded/firmware developers, edge AI/ML engineers, network engineers (5G/SD‑WAN), security engineers (OT/ICS), data/streaming engineers, site deployment/field engineers & edge product managers targeting roles in the UK.

Why Edge Computing Careers in the UK Are Becoming More Multidisciplinary

For years, computing innovation was focused on the cloud. But as demand for real-time analytics, low-latency processing and secure local data handling grows, edge computing has become the next frontier. From autonomous vehicles to healthcare monitoring devices, retail checkout systems to industrial IoT, edge computing is transforming how data is processed and used in the UK. This shift has also changed what it means to work in the field. Edge computing careers are no longer purely technical. They now require knowledge of law, ethics, psychology, linguistics & design, as professionals must consider regulation, human behaviour, communication & usability alongside engineering. In this article, we’ll explore why UK edge computing careers are becoming more multidisciplinary, how these five fields intersect with edge roles, and what job-seekers & employers need to know to thrive in this evolving landscape.

Edge Computing Team Structures Explained: Who Does What in a Modern Edge Computing Department

Edge computing is expanding rapidly in the UK, driven by demands for low latency, on-site processing, IoT proliferation, autonomous systems, 5G, AI inference on devices, and regulatory pressures for data sovereignty. Businesses in sectors such as telecoms, industrial automation, retail, smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and healthcare are pushing computation and intelligence closer to where data is generated. But to design, build, deploy, secure, and maintain edge computing systems requires more than just hardware or software — it requires structured teams with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. If you’re hiring, or applying for roles via EdgeComputingJobs.co.uk, understanding who does what in a mature edge computing department will help you plan better, show relevance in job applications, and build resilient teams. This article covers the key roles in edge computing teams, how they collaborate through the project lifecycle, what skills and qualifications UK employers usually expect, salary benchmarks, challenges and trends, and best practices for structuring effective edge teams.
