Overview

Onsite 5 days a week - Chiswick, London.

Design the Future of Sustainable Storage

At HoloMem, we’re building the next generation of long-term data storage — radically efficient, ultra-durable, and environmentally sustainable. Our pioneering holographic storage technology encodes data as light within advanced materials, creating a resilient alternative to today’s short-lived, energy-intensive cloud infrastructure.

Having partaken in both the Intel Ignite and Deeptech Labs accelerators in 2024, awarded two Innovate UK Smart Grants, we’ve recently closed our Seed+ raise and are accelerating development. To help bring our ambitious product to life, we’re hiring a Senior Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineer to lead the design and integration of precision electromechanical systems at the heart of our platform.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • This is not about integrating off-the-shelf components or following conventional design cycles. At HoloMem, you’ll own the design and build bespoke internal mechanical systems — think precision motion, tape transport, and microcontroller integration — crafted specifically for our cutting-edge data storage architecture. You’ll move fluidly between CAD and the lab, collaborating closely with physicists, materials scientists, and engineers to prototype and iterate at speed.
The Role
  • Push the capabilities of holographic data storage technologies by creating innovative solutions to challenging problems
  • Design and develop precision mechanical and electromechanical subsystem
  • Drive innovation by challenging conventional thinking and developing creative, impactful solutions that push boundaries
  • Integrate motion systems with microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators
  • Be a technical leader within a cross-functional group of mechanical, optical and software engineers, providing critical feedback and suggestions for continuous improvement
  • Diagnose and debug electromechanical and control system challenges
  • Work hands-on in our Chiswick lab — designing, building, testing, and refining
Who You Are

We’re looking for a pragmatic, creative engineer who thrives at the interface of mechanics and electronics. You bring a strong mechanical foundation, with the range and curiosity to work across disciplines and solve real-world, physical problems.

Expected
  • 5+ years’ experience in mechanical or mechatronics engineering, ideally in a high-tech R&D or product environment
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline
  • A portfolio of projects — robotics, automation, mechanical, or motion systems
  • Strong 3D CAD skills and experience producing drawings and building assemblies
  • Hands-on prototyping experience (machining, 3D printing, assembly, soldering)
  • Solid grasp of mechanical fundamentals — kinematics, materials, tolerancing, failure modes
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment
  • Practical experience with GD&T and mechanical metrology
  • Familiarity with embedded microcontrollers (Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi)
  • Scripting in Python for test automation or data analysis
  • A background in optics, photonics, or precision instrumentation
What You’ll Get
  • 25 days annual leave
  • Employer pension contributions
  • A collaborative, knowledgeable team working on deeply technical, world-positive problems
How to Apply

Send us your CV and a portfolio (PDF format) to or use the link below. Show us what you’ve designed, built, or tested. If you’re excited about the mission — even if you don’t meet every requirement — we’d love to hear from you.

HoloMem is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity and are committed to building an inclusive environment for all.

Why Edge Computing Careers in the UK Are Becoming More Multidisciplinary

For years, computing innovation was focused on the cloud. But as demand for real-time analytics, low-latency processing and secure local data handling grows, edge computing has become the next frontier. From autonomous vehicles to healthcare monitoring devices, retail checkout systems to industrial IoT, edge computing is transforming how data is processed and used in the UK. This shift has also changed what it means to work in the field. Edge computing careers are no longer purely technical. They now require knowledge of law, ethics, psychology, linguistics & design, as professionals must consider regulation, human behaviour, communication & usability alongside engineering. In this article, we’ll explore why UK edge computing careers are becoming more multidisciplinary, how these five fields intersect with edge roles, and what job-seekers & employers need to know to thrive in this evolving landscape.

Edge Computing Team Structures Explained: Who Does What in a Modern Edge Computing Department

Edge computing is expanding rapidly in the UK, driven by demands for low latency, on-site processing, IoT proliferation, autonomous systems, 5G, AI inference on devices, and regulatory pressures for data sovereignty. Businesses in sectors such as telecoms, industrial automation, retail, smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and healthcare are pushing computation and intelligence closer to where data is generated. But to design, build, deploy, secure, and maintain edge computing systems requires more than just hardware or software — it requires structured teams with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. If you’re hiring, or applying for roles via EdgeComputingJobs.co.uk, understanding who does what in a mature edge computing department will help you plan better, show relevance in job applications, and build resilient teams. This article covers the key roles in edge computing teams, how they collaborate through the project lifecycle, what skills and qualifications UK employers usually expect, salary benchmarks, challenges and trends, and best practices for structuring effective edge teams.

Why the UK Could Be the World’s Next Edge Computing Jobs Hub

Edge computing is one of the most important technological shifts of the decade. As connected devices, sensors, and the Internet of Things (IoT) generate massive volumes of data, centralised cloud computing alone cannot always keep up. Businesses and governments need faster processing, lower latency, and secure, real-time insights. Edge computing—where data is processed closer to where it is generated—is the answer. From autonomous vehicles and smart cities to advanced healthcare and industrial automation, edge computing underpins the next wave of digital transformation. For professionals, this means an entirely new field of opportunity. Edge computing requires engineers, architects, analysts, cyber security specialists, and operations staff with highly specialised skills. The United Kingdom is particularly well-positioned to become a global edge computing jobs hub. With its strong infrastructure, thriving tech ecosystem, leading universities, and government commitment to digital innovation, the UK has many of the ingredients necessary to lead. This article explores why the UK could claim global leadership in edge computing careers, the sectors driving demand, and what must happen to make this vision a reality.
