Role Overview

The IoT Cloud Software Engineer is a key technical role in the Digital Innovation team to provide the technology and expertise to achieve Rentokil Initial’s Connect growth targets. The role requires extensive technical skills and values.

Main Tasks

Deliver platform solutions and services:



  • Automated orchestration of services on the platforms
  • Design, build and deliver pre-approved cloud infrastructure for consumption by the IoT product/development teams
  • Own and maintain the repository of automated, pre-approved, fully tested and reusable patterns and templates that can be reused (everything as code)
  • Provide expert advice to IoT product teams on the best way to use existing services and utilities from the repositories
  • Follow platform security standards and ensure they are met, in conjunction with the Information Security team
  • Building and implementing new development tools and infrastructure
  • Automating manual processes to manage a growing IoT estate (remote firmware and configuration updates)
  • Understanding the needs of stakeholders and conveying them to developers

Operational reliability:



  • Act as a technical point of contact on the IoT platform for the cloud service providers (e.g. Google) to ensure the Platform is operational and is able to meet the service levels of the products using the platform
  • Maintain the enterprise wide view of all the IoT offerings of the Products including usage and billing
  • Maintain services once they are live by measuring and monitoring availability, performance, system health
  • Scale systems through automation, and evolve systems by pushing for changes that improve reliability and performance
  • Continuously improving our security, failover, resilience and disaster recovery mechanisms
  • Work with Lead Developers and Architects on the adoption of new technologies into the estate, ensuring that these are shared with other areas and that they align with company standards

Requirements

  • Expert in writing well structured code including Java, Python, SQL and following good development practises
  • Experience of using Cloud technologies to provide a scalable, maintainable solution using cutting edge technologies and techniques. Vital to have experience with Serverless technologies - preferable GCP.
  • Able to quickly learn new technologies and work with colleagues and third parties to quickly deliver a robust cloud solution.
  • Willing to join an out of hours rota to provide on call support outside of normal operating hours.
  • Good communicator (Written and Oral) with sound facilitation and presentation skills that can be related to colleagues of all levels including third parties and senior leaders
  • Experience of automation, making things repeatable, developing scripts to support these processes
  • Desire to investigate, evaluate and recommend new tools and technologies
  • Experience detecting and resolving security, performance and availability issues - good troubleshooting skills
  • Knowledge of IT Operational support processes
  • The personality to question and challenge practices or procedures that do not meet high standards
  • Able to produce clear and comprehensive documentation
  • Hands‑on experience writing bash/linux shell scripts
