The role


As an HGV Mechanic - Examiner, you’ll be at the heart of our defence engineering operations, ensuring military vehicles and equipment are mission ready undertaking the servicing, repair, maintenance and Inspection of Military vehicles, including diagnostic duties. This is a hands‑on role where your technical expertise will directly support UK defence capability. You’ll be part of a close‑knit team maintaining and repairing a wide range of vehicles and electrical systems, helping to keep our armed forces mobile, safe and effective.


Day‑to‑day you’ll be:



  • Diagnosing, inspecting and assessing vehicles and mechanical or electrical equipment
  • Completing servicing, repairs, maintenance and overhauls to required standards
  • Ensuring all transactions are performed in accordance with current ERP processes
  • Completing documentation and test certificates to current standards
  • Ensuring correct use of tools, material and equipment, and returning unused or faulty items

Please note that this position involves manual work. This could include lifting, bending, using tools or standing for extended periods of time. The successful candidate will be required to pass a targeted medical questionnaire and/or medical examination as a condition of employment for this role.


The role is based onsite at Albemarle Barracks, and the set working times are Monday to Thursday, totalling 37 hours per week. There is no mandatory overtime, night shift, or weekend working.


Essential experience of the HGV Mechanic – Examiner:



  • Previous experience within a similar role or military setting
  • HGV experience
  • Minimum of 3 years trade experience, as per DVSA mandatory requirement
  • Holds a valid UK driving licence, including Category C

Qualifications for the HGV Mechanic - Examiner:



  • Completed relevant technical or vocational qualification equivalent to NQF Level 3 (Advanced apprenticeship, level 3 NVQ) in Heavy Vehicles
  • Qualification (NVQ/SVQ) in motor mechanics (Heavy Vehicles) or EAL Level 3 NVQ/SVQ Extended.

Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
