As an apprentice mobile mechanic, you will complete services, repairs, and diagnostics at customers' homes or workplaces, offering a diverse range of experiences.

Responsibilities
  • Access vehicle technical data to inform inspections and make judgments on wear and serviceability.
  • Prepare the vehicle and working area before the work activity, including removing or mitigating slip and trip hazards.
  • Maintain and restore the work area during and on completion of the activity.
  • Store, maintain, including calibration checks, and return tools and equipment to storage.
  • Comply with health and safety procedures in the workplace in compliance with regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability procedures, regulations, standards, and guidance, including segregation of resources for reuse, recycling, and disposal.
  • Apply vehicle safety inspection and routine maintenance procedures using vehicle specific data on cars, car derived vans, or light goods vehicles.
  • Select and use tools and equipment, mechanical and electrical measuring tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Remove, repair and replace vehicle tyres and balance wheel assemblies on cars and light vehicles (e.g., ultra-low profile, directional, asymmetric, run-flat tyres).
  • Inspect, remove, and replace parts or components in cars, car derived vans, or light goods vehicles for steering, suspension, braking, emission, air conditioning, battery and charging, and fluid and filtration systems.
  • Apply state-of-health condition monitoring tests to high voltage batteries and chargers for electrified vehicles.
  • Apply four-wheel geometry checks and adjustments to cars, car derived vans, and light goods vehicles.
  • Apply safe working practices and procedures to isolate electrified vehicles for maintenance.
  • Record vehicle service maintenance, parts replacement, or repair.
  • Apply customer service principles and organisational customer care practices, including identifying customer and vehicle needs, resolving low-level customer complaints, and making recommendations based on inspection, maintenance, or repair results.
  • Provide quotations of cost and order automotive parts, products, and consumables applicable to the vehicle.
  • Apply procedures for stock and parts storage: ordering, checking, and stock rotation.
  • Apply organisational sales processes, including show and tell, features and benefits, consultative selling, mini closing and closing.
  • Apply team working principles and comply with equity, diversity, and inclusion guidance.
  • Communicate with others verbally and in writing with customers, suppliers, colleagues, and managers.
  • Use information and digital technology systems and comply with GDPR and cyber security.
  • Complete and record learning and development activities.
  • Apply procedures to check and replace fluids and filtration parts.
  • Prepare the vehicle and working area before the work activity and maintain the work area during and on completion of the activity (repeat for emphasis).
  • Provide service and maintenance information in line with company processes and customer needs.
  • Travel with a company van to and from breakdown locations as required.
Training and Programme

Training schedule: During your apprenticeship programme you will complete a mix of college learning and on-the-job training. This role provides hands-on experience beyond mechanical work. You will be employed by the RAC and attend college on block releases in Enfield, working toward achieving the Level 2 Autocare Technician apprenticeship. The programme combines college learning with hands-on training led by experienced apprentice team leaders, with variety including diagnostics, repairs, servicing, and checks.

One of the North London Garages Training Officers and RAC Mentors will monitor your competence regularly as part of our close support network to help apprentices succeed.

Qualifications
  • GCSE in English and Mathematics (minimum grade 4 or above).
  • Communication skills, attention to detail, organisation, customer care, problem solving, analytical skills, logical thinking, team working, creativity, initiative, non-judgemental attitude, and patience.
Requirements and Eligibility
  • Applicants must be over 18 for insurance purposes (no upper age limit) and hold a full UK driving licence with a maximum of 3 points.
  • GCSE or equivalent Maths and English minimum grade 4 or above.
  • Ability to work in local area and travel to training centre for block release; this may involve commuting.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Wage: £15,500 per year in the first year, increasing to the National Living Wage in the second year (plus a £5,000 London Weighting Allowance if applicable).
  • Starting Autocare Technician (Level 2) training; hours: contracted average around 40 hours per week; details to be confirmed at interview.
  • Duration: 2 years; following successful completion, opportunity to apply for full-time employment as a Mobile Mechanic.
  • Potential salary on completion: starting around £38,625 per year with OTE £53k+.
  • Employer: RAC in conjunction with North London Garages, a leading breakdown service provider with a diverse and inclusive culture.
Location and Schedule

This role involves driving a company van to and from breakdown locations. The specific hours, days, and block college attendance will be discussed during the employer interview and by North London Garages. The successful candidate will be able to work in their local area and travel to the training centre for block release.
