Senior Mechanical Engineer

Permanent | Competitive Salary + Benefits

Location: Thurrock

Are you an experienced Mechanical Engineer with experience working in a COMAH environment, looking to step into a role where you can directly shape engineering standards, influence investment decisions, and drive meaningful improvements across multiple sites? This is an exciting opportunity to join a well-established yet fast growing and agile organisation during a period of significant capital investment and site development.

About the opportunity

As Senior Mechanical Engineer, you'll become the mechanical engineering focal point across a high-hazard, top-tier COMAH environment. With major multi‑million‑pound projects underway, ongoing upgrades to ageing infrastructure, and an engineering function modernising its systems and standards, this role offers the chance to genuinely leave your mark.

You’ll work closely with the leadership team and collaborate with discipline engineers, project managers, plant inspectors, maintenance teams and external specialists to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of a broad range of mechanical assets - from rotating equipment and pressure systems to boilers, vessels, compressors and site utilities.

This is a technically varied, hands‑on role with strong strategic influence.

What you’ll be doing

  • Leading mechanical engineering activities across the site, with wider support to other UK facilities.
  • Providing expert input to the design, specification, installation and commissioning of new plant, equipment and modifications.
  • Supporting inspection teams with critical equipment assessments, developing repair scopes and contributing to mechanical integrity strategies.
  • Updating and improving mechanical engineering standards, specifications and procedures across the business.
  • Partnering with Maintenance to develop preventive and predictive maintenance strategies that reduce downtime and improve reliability.
  • Troubleshooting complex mechanical issues and providing solutions that support safe and efficient production.
  • Conducting risk assessments, RCAs, reliability studies and participating in HAZOPs, MoCs and similar safety reviews.
  • Supporting capital projects – from early scoping through budgets, contractor oversight and installation.
  • Ensuring robust documentation through collaboration with document control and CAD design teams.
  • Driving continuous improvement to enhance plant reliability, performance and energy efficiency.

What we’re looking for

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards chartership.
  • Proven experience in a senior mechanical engineering role within a Chemical, Oil & Gas or similar heavy industrial setting – Upper Tier COMAH experience is essential.
  • Strong knowledge of rotating equipment, pressure systems, piping design and relevant industry codes (ASME, API, EEMUA, etc).
  • Background in reliability engineering, mechanical integrity and maintenance best practice.
  • Experience contributing to or delivering engineering work within multi‑million‑pound capital projects.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and problem‑solving skills with the ability to influence and engage across functions.

Why join?

  • A chance to shape the mechanical engineering function within a growing, well‑invested business.
  • Exposure to major capital projects and meaningful engineering challenges.
  • An agile organisation where decisions are made quickly, and engineering expertise is valued.
  • The opportunity to mentor, guide and elevate standards across the wider engineering team.
  • A top‑tier COMAH environment where your work directly enhances safety, reliability and long‑term asset health.

If you’re an experienced mechanical engineer looking for a role with depth, autonomy and impact, we’d love to hear from you.

Apply today and help drive the next wave of engineering excellence across the business.

Our client is an equal opportunities employer and we encourage applicants from all backgrounds.

Edge Computing Recruitment Trends 2025 (UK): What Job Seekers Need To Know About Today’s Hiring Process

Summary: UK edge computing hiring has moved from tool‑lists to capability‑driven assessments that emphasise resilient edge architectures, real‑time data pipelines, secure device fleets, container/Kubernetes at the edge, on‑device/near‑edge ML, and measurable business impact (latency, reliability, cost‑to‑serve). This guide explains what’s changed, what to expect in interviews & how to prepare—especially for edge platform engineers, IoT/OT engineers, edge SREs, embedded/firmware engineers, edge AI/ML engineers, network engineers (5G/private LTE), security specialists & product managers. Who this is for: Edge platform/SRE, IoT solution architects, embedded/firmware developers, edge AI/ML engineers, network engineers (5G/SD‑WAN), security engineers (OT/ICS), data/streaming engineers, site deployment/field engineers & edge product managers targeting roles in the UK.

Why Edge Computing Careers in the UK Are Becoming More Multidisciplinary

For years, computing innovation was focused on the cloud. But as demand for real-time analytics, low-latency processing and secure local data handling grows, edge computing has become the next frontier. From autonomous vehicles to healthcare monitoring devices, retail checkout systems to industrial IoT, edge computing is transforming how data is processed and used in the UK. This shift has also changed what it means to work in the field. Edge computing careers are no longer purely technical. They now require knowledge of law, ethics, psychology, linguistics & design, as professionals must consider regulation, human behaviour, communication & usability alongside engineering. In this article, we’ll explore why UK edge computing careers are becoming more multidisciplinary, how these five fields intersect with edge roles, and what job-seekers & employers need to know to thrive in this evolving landscape.

Edge Computing Team Structures Explained: Who Does What in a Modern Edge Computing Department

Edge computing is expanding rapidly in the UK, driven by demands for low latency, on-site processing, IoT proliferation, autonomous systems, 5G, AI inference on devices, and regulatory pressures for data sovereignty. Businesses in sectors such as telecoms, industrial automation, retail, smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and healthcare are pushing computation and intelligence closer to where data is generated. But to design, build, deploy, secure, and maintain edge computing systems requires more than just hardware or software — it requires structured teams with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. If you’re hiring, or applying for roles via EdgeComputingJobs.co.uk, understanding who does what in a mature edge computing department will help you plan better, show relevance in job applications, and build resilient teams. This article covers the key roles in edge computing teams, how they collaborate through the project lifecycle, what skills and qualifications UK employers usually expect, salary benchmarks, challenges and trends, and best practices for structuring effective edge teams.
