Fitter (HGV Field Service Engineer)

We are thrilled to announce a major contract win with Southern Water! We are recruiting for a Mobile Fitter Engineer, covering the whole of Southern Water area. This is a fantastic opportunity to start a new career with us here at Lanes Group!

About the Role

You will be responsible for the maintenance of our fleet of vehicles (ranging from small vans to HGVs). You will need to be organised and have good attention to detail. The ideal candidate is someone who has a real passion for all things automotive and takes a proactive approach to manual fault finding through to resolution.



  • Hydraulic and High Pressure Jetting Systems: possess in‑depth knowledge of hydraulic systems, maintain & troubleshoot high‑pressure jetting systems, conduct regular inspections and testing.
  • Vehicle Maintenance: conduct routine inspections and maintenance of the fleet, diagnose and troubleshoot hydraulic and high‑pressure jetting system issues, perform preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Repair and Troubleshooting: respond promptly to breakdowns and emergencies, utilise diagnostic tools, collaborate with the wider team to analyse recurring problems and implement preventive measures.
  • Legislation and Compliance: stay up to date with relevant legislation and industry standards, ensure all maintenance and repair activities comply with health and safety regulations and environmental standards, promote safe working practices.

Location & Travel

Based out of the Millbrook depot (Southampton, Hampshire) but travelling across the Southern Water area covering Kent, Sussex and the Isle of Wight.


Position & Type

Permanent, full‑time (Monday to Friday, 40 hours).


Salary & Benefits

Up to £55,000 per annum (basic pay, overtime, on‑call allowance and bonuses). Benefits include 21 days holiday (plus bank holidays), birthday off, health cash plan, onsite parking, auto enrolment pension scheme, enhanced maternity & paternity, retention loyalty scheme and a company van with fuel card.


Qualifications & Requirements

  • Class B Driving Licence.
  • Fully recognised industry qualifications (City & Guilds or equivalent); Class C+E / HGV Class 2 Licence essential.
  • IOSH or NEBOSH qualifications useful.
  • Previous water industry experience preferred; hydraulics experience desirable.
  • Strong background in commercial HGV vehicle servicing.
